前言 | Preface


自從華碩易電腦(Eee PC)一年前把全球第一部「網本」(Netbook)帶來世上以來,固態硬碟這門新技術便從不成熟的貴族玩意,以低容量低效率的切面引進尋常百姓家,成為一眾 Eee PC 和其他平價「網本」的預設儲存裝置。


Since the introduction of the world's first Netbook Asus Eee PC one year ago, the  immature-and-expensive-at-first Solid State Drives (SSD) had found its way to the cheap and developing Eee PC and netbook market by using chips of lower capacity and efficiency. 


使用固態硬碟的 Eee PC 型號,由於大多只具備 4GB - 32GB 的低容量的固態硬碟,可安裝的程式和可存放的檔案都比使用 80-160GB 硬碟版本的為少。不少用家遂自行購買 SDHC 卡進行容量補完;有部份有創意的網友更自行加裝 1.8 吋的 ZIF 界面硬碟機,甚至利用 ZIF-Compact Flash 轉接器和高容量的 Compact Flash 卡來「自製」固態硬碟


Most Eee PC w/SSD models usually equipped with 4GB - 32GB low capacity SSDs, and hence the number of applications and files they can store would be far less than those models that equipped with 80-160GB hard disk drives. Many users therefore would end up buying SDHC cards to expand their usable storage capacity. Some other creative users got their Eee PCs modified to fit a 1.8" ZIF hard diskdrive into their little machines, while some others even home-made their SSDs by using a ZIF-Compact Flash adapter and a high capacity Compact Flash card!



However, the above solutions aren't perfect:


  • SDHC 卡長插在機體內未嘗不可,不過目前主流的SDHC 卡最高只達 16GB;32GB 的縱使已經推出,但售價仍然高昂,在主流市場上也未找到達到 Class 6 速度 32GB SDHC 記憶卡。而且當有需要把其他記億卡拿來讀取的時候,我們要先把長插的記憶卡拔出來,實在不太方便。再加上把記憶卡長插在機體內,會使讀卡器長期運作,增加耗電,縮短可使用的時間。

    Even it is not impractical to have SDHC card staying inside the built-in card reader all the time, the largest SDHC card you can get in mainstream market is still a 16GB one. Although 32GB SDHC has been released recently, it is still expensive and it is still rare to find a 32GB SDHC card that is at least Class 6 is speed. Morever, when you need to read another SDHC card, you will always have to pull out the original card, which is quite troublesome sometimes. Staying a SDHC card inside the built-in card reader would also consume more power from the machine, and hence result in shorter usable battery life. 

  • 1.8 吋硬碟機目前價格尚算高昂,而且大多只有 4200 轉的速度,效率欠佳。部份 Eee PC 901 批次也沒有 ZIF 插位;即使有 ZIF 插位,安裝時也需要一些特別技巧才能把連接線插入,難度較高;況且改裝硬碟也喪失了抗震的原意,所以這方案只可淪為小眾玩意。

    While the price of 1.8" hard disk drives still remains at a very high level, most of these drives are only 4200rpm ones and that means they are considerably inefficent when compared to traditional 5400rpm notebook hard drives. ZIF slot is not found in some Eee PC 901 batches; even yours has got one, it still requires some advanced skills in order to insert the connection cable to the ZIF slot. Replacing your original SSD with a hard disk drive also sacrifices the anti-shocking advantages of SSDs. So after all, this could only be a hobbyist mod rather than a practical mod.

  • ZIF-Compact Flash 轉接卡配 Compact Flash 的方案勝在夠彈性,可隨意挑選市面上眾多的 Compact Flash 卡安裝;但其敗筆也是出於其高彈性,因為不同的 Compact Flash 卡在 Eee PC 上的兼容度都有所不同,而且轉接卡多由祖國的「山寨廠」出品,質素和數據傳送穩定性都不能保證;再加上 Compact Flash 的價錢普遍比 SDHC 還高,目前最高容量也只得 32GB,所以也不太划算。

    The ZIF-Compact Flash adapter + Compact Flash Card solution is flexible in terms of the wide range choices of CF cards in the market; however, the cons of this solution is also come from its flexibility. Different CF cards often suffer from compatibility problems with the Eee PC hardware, and what's worse, most ZIF-CF adpaters were manufactured by unknown factories in China. Their cheap price implied that their quality and the stability of data transfer are not guaranteed. Considering the fact that the maximum capacity of CF cards found in the market is 32GB only, and the fact that most CF cards still cost more than their SDHC equivalents, this solution is far from ideal.


由於部份 Eee PC 型號,包括 701 首批 7A 批號字頭的機種、702、900、900A、901 和 1000 都備有 Mini PCI-E 介面,而且有見 Eee PC 用家對儲存空間的需求十分殷切,不少廠商如 MyDigitalSSDBuffaloPatriotSuper Talent 等,都製作了 Mini PCI-E 介面的高容量固態硬碟,讓用家可輕鬆地自行升級。日前美國記憶體品牌 Super Talent 的香港代理引入了由該廠推出的 Eee PC Mini PCI-E 介面固態硬碟卡,以每 GB 價錢比 SDHC 更便宜的價格在本地市場發售,當中包括 8GB SLC/MLC、 16GB SLC/MLC、32GB SLC/MLC 和 64GB MLC 的型號。


Because some Eee PC models, such as the first batches of 701 (with "7A" prefix in their serial no.), 702, 900, 900A, 901 and 1000, come with built-in Mini PCI-E interface, and considering the fact that many Eee PC users would like to have more storage capacity in their little machines, many memory manufacturers such as MyDigitalSSD, Buffalo, Patriot and Super Talent have recently launched their own Mini PCI-E SSD card solutions for the Eee PC market.


Among these manufacturers, here in Hong Kong the distributor of the US-brand memory manufacturer Super Talent has recently imported the Super Talent Mini PCI-E SSD cards to the Hong Kong retail market in very competitive prices --- they are cheaper even than SDHC cards in terms of GB per dollar! Available models include 8GB SLC/MLC, 16GB SLC/MLC, 32GB SLC/MLC and 64GB MLC cards.

So here it goes! This is the Super Talent 64GB Mini PCI-E Solid State Drive FPM64GHAE for Eee PC.




背面可以看到,儲存晶片用上 Samsung MLC 顆粒,中間的控制器用上 PHISON 顆粒。

安裝過程 | Installation



  1. 關掉電源、拆除電池和電線
  2. 扭開背蓋的兩顆螺絲,拆除背蓋
  3. 扭開原廠卡的兩顆螺絲,拔出原廠卡
  4. 把新卡插上,然後把兩顆螺絲上回
  5. 放回背蓋和上回螺絲,插回電池
  6. 完成!


當然,安裝前最好先以 Norton Ghost 或同類軟件為原廠卡的資料備份到外置硬碟裡,待安裝後再用 Ghost 複製資料到新卡裡。


The installation procedure is extremely simple:

  1. Switch off the power of your Eee PC, unplug the battery and power cable.
  2. Unscrew the two screws of the back cover, then remove the back cover.
  3. Unscrew the two screws of the original SSD card, then remove the card.
  4. Insert the new card, then put the two screws back.
  5. Put the back cover back and the two screws back.
  6. Done!


Of course, it's always wise to back up the data in the original SSD card to an external hard disk drive using Norton Ghost (or any other similar software), and then restore the data back to the new SSD card after the installation (using Ghost)

日常應用上遇到的問題 | Problems encountered during daily usage


以上測試都是在 Super Hybrid Engine 的 High Performance Mode 下完成的。不過我近日發現,固態硬碟在 Eee PC 電池供電的預設模式 Power Saving Mode 進行檔案讀寫時,卻出現以下情況:

Despite the fact that all the above tests were performed in Super Hybrid Engine High Performance Mode, I had encountered several problems of this particular SSD when my Eee PC was accessing and writing data in Power Saving Mode:


  • Windows 的事件檢視器裡出現大量的磁碟機錯誤事件,包括控制器錯誤、同位錯誤等 emotion
There were lots of disk error events showing up in the Windows Event Viewer, including but not limited to controller error and parity error etc.


  • 大量的錯誤觸發 Windows 的自動降速機制,令固態硬碟的速度逐漸由 Ultra DMA Mode 5 模式降至最慢的 PIO 模式 emotion

    The huge amount of error will trigger Windows' default protection mechanism so that hard disk drives can be run in a slower speed for better data durability. Your SSD transfer will gradually drop from Ultra DMA Mode 5 down to the very slow PIO mode.

  • 固態硬碟讀寫速度大幅降至每秒 1 - 2 MB emotion
Your SSD read/write speed dropped down to 1 - 2 MB per minute.




由於在 High Performance 和 Super Performance 模式、以至沒有載入 Super Hybrid Engine 的 Windows Pre-installation Environment 和 Windows XP 的安全模式都沒有出現這種情況,我推斷這是 Eee PC 在 Power Saving 模式時未有足夠的電力撥備給耗電量比原廠 8GB MLC 固態硬碟卡為大的 64GB MLC 固態硬碟卡所致。

I could not replicate the same problem in High Performance and Super Performance modes. The problem didn't turn up in Windows Pre-Installation Environment and Windows XP Safe Mode either. So I suspect the voltage allocated to the 64GB MLC SSD during Power Saving mode was insufficent for the card's normal operation, because the power consumption of the 64GB MLC SSD card may be greater than that of the stock 8GB MLC SSD card.


官方解決方案 | Official Solution

2008/11/21 更新:Super Talent 已就問題提供修正程式,將固態硬碟的數據傳輸模式由 Ultra DMA Mode 5 降為 Ultra DMA Mode 4,並解決了上面所述的 Power Saving Mode 下所出現的種種問題。安裝詳情請參考他們的說明文件

2008/11/21 Update: Super Talent has just released a software patch that will modify the data transfer mode of the SSD from Ultra DMA Mode 5 to Ultra DMA Mode 4. The patch has also fixed the Power Saving Mode disk error problems as mentioned above. For installation details, please refer to their official documentation.

下圖是安裝修正程式後,固態硬碟在各速度模式下的讀寫表現 (按圖放大)。我們可以看到,與未安裝修正程式前比較(註:之前的測試都是在 Windows PE 下進行,處理器速度和電壓等與 High Performance Mode 時相若) ,固態硬碟因傳輸模式的降級而導致讀速有每秒 1-2 MB 的下降;然而,它的寫速卻出奇地有輕微的上升。Atto 與 FDBench 的結果都顯示,固態硬碟的讀寫速度與速度模式成正比,也就是說固態硬碟在 Super Performance Mode 下的讀寫表現會比在 Power Saving Mode 時有所增長,但兩者差異並非十分明顯。反而 HDTune 測出來的結果卻恰恰相反,可能是該軟件是針對傳統機械磁性硬碟作優化所致吧?

The following picture summarizes the read/write performance of the SSD after applying the patch (click the picture to see the enlarged version). Compared to the speed test performed before applying the patch (Note: the previous tests were performed under Windows PE, where CPU speed and voltage parameters are similar to those udner High Performance Mode), patched SSD is 1-2 MB/sec slower than when it was unpatched; however, the SSD has slightly faster write speed after being patched. From the results of Atto and FDBench, the read/write speed of the SSD is directly proportional to the speed mode, i.e. read/write speed of the SSD under Super Performance Mode is faster than that of the Power Saving Mode, although the speed difference is not very significant. Interestingly, the HDTune results showed the opposite pattern - perhaps this is due to the fact that HDTune is more optimized for traditional mechanical magnetic hard disk drives rather than for SSDs?




折衷解決方案 | Workarounds

在華碩、 Super Talent 、PHISON 或三星提出解決方案前,有意考慮購入此卡的朋友可以考慮以下方案:

While a perfect solution is still expected from Asus, Super Talent PHISON or Samsun, those of you who would like to purchase this card should consider the following workaround approaches:


  •  方案 1: 長期使用 High Performance Mode,或乾脆把 Super Hybrid Engine 移除

    Workarond 1: Always use High Performance Mode, or simply uninstall the Super Hybrid Engine.
  • 缺點:電腦耗電量大增,使用電池時電腦的可使用時間大為縮短 emotion
    Cons: This will increase the power consumption of the Eee PC dramatically, which in result shortens the usable time when the machine is getting power from the battery.

  • 方案 2:把 Super Hybrid Engine 移除,改用 eeectl 來做降頻省電效果。emotion 先把網友製作供 Eee PC 901 專用的 eeectl.ini 的速度一段,由:

    Workaround 2: Remove Super Hyrbied Engine and use eeectl instead for power saving purpose. Get a copy of eeectl.ini provided by friends in EeeUser forum, and modify the speed profile from:

    Speed.Profiles = 30,166,0,1.0GHz - Ultra Low; 36,166,0,1.2Ghz - Low; 40,166; 48,166,1,1.6Ghz - Normal; 50,176,1,1.68Ghz - High; 54,176,1,1.8Ghz - Super;

    改為 to:

    Speed.Profiles = 30,166,1,1.0GHz - Ultra Low; 36,166,1,1.2Ghz - Low; 40,166; 48,166,1,1.6Ghz - Normal; 50,176,1,1.68Ghz - High; 54,176,1,1.8Ghz - Super;

    然後才執行 eeectl.exe。
    And then run eeectl.exe.
  • 缺點:雖然這可以透過降頻來達致部份省電效果,但由於電壓必須設定為 1 的正常水平,節能效果以至穩定性都不及原廠 Super Hybrid Engine 的 Power Saving Mode 好 。

    Cons: Authough you can reduce the power consumption by modifying the CPU frequencies, the voltage level needs to remain as Normal level (1) for the SSD to work properly. The power saving effectiveness, as well as the system stability of this solution, would not be comparable to that of the native Power Saving Mode provided by the stock Super Hybrid Engine.
  • 方案 3:如果你的固態硬碟不幸已被設定為 PIO 模式運作(要查看,可右擊「我的電腦」→「管理」→「裝置管理員」,在右手邊的樹狀架構裡展開「IDE ATA/ATAPI 控制器」,雙擊「次要 IDE 通道」,然後點選「進階設定」頁籤),你可以透過執行這個檔案,叫 Windows 在重新開機後重新偵測固態硬碟的正確傳送模式。emotion

    Workaround 3: If your SSD was unfortunately slowed down by Windows (to check this, right click "My Computer", choose "Manage" and click "Device Manager". In the tree structure at right hand side, expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller" item, and then double click the "Secondary IDE Channel" item. Selects the "Advanced Settings" tab to check the data transfer mode of the SSD.), you can force Windows to re-detect the correct SSD data transfer mode by running this file.


  • 缺點:這方法治標不治本,並無法解決電腦供電不足的問題。emotion
    Cons: This workaround doesn't solve the problem from its root of cause.

  • 方案 4:把原廠 4GB SLC 的固態硬碟拆下來,只用 64GB MLC 固態硬碟,以圖省點電力。 emotion

    Workaround 4: Remove the stock 4GB SLC SSD and use the 64GB MLC SSD only. This should save some amount of power consumption.
  • 缺點:此方法未證實是否可行。把原廠 4GB SLC 的固態硬碟拆下來需要拆開整個機殼,過程也很繁複。而且,MLC 固態硬碟上安裝 Windows,表現不會及安裝在原廠 4GB SLC 固態硬碟時為好。

    Cons: This workaround is not yet confirmed. It requires very advanced skills and complicated process to remove the stock 4GB SLC SSD because you will have to open up the entire case. Also, Windows running on this MLC SSD should not be comparable to the stock SLC SSD solution in performance-wise.


結論 | Conclusions


在軟件測量上,這張 Super Talent 64GB MLC 固態硬碟卡的讀速比原廠的 8GB MLC 固態硬碟卡為高;在寫速上卻略遜一籌。而在實際的檔案抄寫工作中,此卡的讀速優勢也似乎難以全面展現。如果原廠的 8GB MLC 固態硬碟也不適宜用來安裝操作系統,那麼我們也不應期望我們在這張卡上安裝操作系統後可以順暢使用。emotion


According to performance tests done by testing tools, the Super Talent 64GB MLC SSD card outperforms the Asus stock 8GB MLC SSD card in reading speeds. But when we talk about the writing speed, the situation comes to the opposite. In practical file copying operations, the faster reading speed advantage of this card is not very apparent. If installing an operating system on the stock 8GB MLC SSD card does not fulfill your expectations on system efficiency and responsiveness, then please forget about installing an OS on this Super Talent card. emotion


然而,這張卡的 Mini PCI-E 介面具有其他方案不能比擬的容易安裝特性、比 SDHC 卡更低廉的每 GB 價格、以及比 SDHC/CF/1.8 吋硬碟 卡更高的儲存容量,性價比十分超卓。對容量先決的一般用家,用千多元左右的價錢便能為便攜的 Eee PC 換取更大的自由度安裝更多軟件、放置更多照片、影片和資料,也不失為一個化算的選擇。


至於在 Power Saving Mode 時遇到的問題,希望有關方面能夠盡快修正,讓用家們能同時享受到省電、高速和高容量配置的解決方案。 emotion


The very fair performance doesn't negate the fact that the Super Talent Mini PCI-e SSD card is easy to install, is cheaper than SDHC cards per GB, and it is higher capacity than most SDHC/CF/1.8" hard disk drives. The cost/performance ratio of this card is great and it is deserved for my recommendation if you are just looking for a larger storage solution to put moreapplications, photos, videos and data on your very portable Eee PC.


Regarding the problems encountered in Power Saving Mode, I sincerely hope that a fix should be provided by the responsible parties so that users of this SSD can enjoy a power saving, high capacity and speedy solution. emotion


測試時係用電池定係火牛? 發覺用火牛部機整體會快些少. 有機會試下單一單file. windows 入邊好多細又零碎file, 未必完全試倒ssd既速度.

測試時係接住火牛的~不過除o左 file size, 其實變數仲有好多...e.g.

- Power Saving / High Performance Mode (有人聲稱 Power Saving Mode 反而會快o左,而我o既測試係用 High Performance 做的)

- BIOS 版本... 我用緊 BIOS 1702

- File System... 我用緊 NTFS,又有人話 FAT32 會快o的

不過我估即使計埋呢O的變數,得出來O既結果都唔會差好遠...emotion 而且我同原廠卡比較時, 都係用同樣的變數,所以都仲係有參考價值的

其實用得eeepc,就係因為佢輕及細~因此雖然呢64gb mlc唔係快,但如果遲d唔係太貴的話我都會入返條換左我部900的16gb MLC~

if i were you, i would like to buy a smaller slc card. i'm now considering a 16gb slc card while if i want to have larger capacity, i would rather use an external usb (ssd) hard disk, or, ftp to my server. (an external 32gb usb ssd hard disk just cost hk$1000.00 and it adv. it can have 100mb/sec. Writing speed. (who knows it is true or not!)) a fast ssd is very important for me if i'm doing my job on the road. or, i can have multi-os in single computer. will you please tell me where can i buy those pci-e ssd card for my 901. i've search s.s.p. and m.k. computer shopping mall but i can't found your card.
